Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables account for approximately half of your diet, the exact amount is determined according to age and gender. USDA recommends kids from ages 2 to 8 should consume 1 to 1.5 cups of fruit daily.  A consumption of 1.5 cups of fruit daily is necessary for boys from 9 to 13 and girls from 9 to 18, while boys 14 to 18 need an intake of 2 cups of fruit per day.  Vegetable intake is recommended as follows:  1 cup for kids from 2 to 3; 1.5 cups from 4 to 8; 2 cups for girls from 9 to 13; 2.5 cups for girls 14 to 18 and boys 9 to 13; and 3 cups for boys 14 to 18.

Grains

It’s proven to be healthier to go with whole grains than with refined grains. Kids from 2 to 3 should consume at least 1.5 ounces of grains daily, a figure that climbs to 2.5 ounces for those from 4 to 8. Girls from 9 to 18 and boys 9 to 13 need at least 3 ounces daily and boys 14 to 18 should have at least 4 ounces of grain.

Protein Foods

There is such wider range of selections for protein foods, besides fish, meat and poultry, explaining that nuts, seeds, beans, peas and soybean derivatives are also rich sources of protein. The food pyramid chart for kids recommends kids ages 2 to 3 should consume 2 ounces of protein foods; 4 ounces for ages 4 to 8; girls 9 to 18 and boys 9 to 13 need 5 ounces; and 6.5 ounces for boys from 14 to 18.

The nutrients in dairy foods play an important part for children especially during the critical years of growth and development.  Kids 2 to 3 need 2 cups per day; kids ages 4 to 8 need 2.5 cups; and 3 cups for ages 9 to 18. 3 teaspoons is recommended for kids between 2 to 3 years of age; from 4 to 8 need 4 teaspoons; girls between 9 to 18 and boys 9 to 13 should consume 5 teaspoon; and 6 teaspoons for boys from ages 14 to 18. Above all, the food pyramid chart for kids suggests  that daily source of dairy and oil may come natural oils such as from fish, nuts and others foods.
