What is Bad Dürkheim Wine Festival?
The Wurstmarkt or Bad Dürkheim Biggest Wine Festival is one of most traditional wine festivals in Germany. It is organized in the middle of the town which is renowned for the famous giant Wine cask, the largest wine barrel in the world. This festival attracts over 600,000 visitors each year. It takes place on the second and third weekend of September.
In the 12th century, local farmers along with wine growers gathered to sell their products to the pilgrims. By 1417, people called this event Michaelistmarkt. Over the next few centuries, it became a three-day fairground on the slopes of the Michelsberg. In 1832, it named Wurstmarkt and today it has become the biggest wine festival in the world.
Because the whole festival is organized in the center of the Pfalz, you can use buses or rail from surrounding villages instead of using a car for coming to the event.
You can taste up to 15 different wines from the Bad Dürkheim region in 50 distinct places throughout the festival. Not only do you taste many different wines, but you can also immerse in the atmosphere of the Munich Beer Festival. There are traditional German brass bands and visitors can dance on the table and link arm in arm with the locals.
Besides to wine tasting, you can enjoy local specialties, as well visit numerous stalls, fairground attractions. Other activities you shouldn’t miss are carnival rides, fireworks and literature contests.
